World Literacy Day

"Literacy is the best remedy"

This is the theme for International Literacy Day 2008, which places special emphasis on the important relationship between literacy and health, especially HIV/AIDS and major diseases like tuberculosis and malaria.

In 1965, the World Conference of Ministers of Education on the Eradication of Illiteracy recommended that 8 September, the date of the inauguration of the Conference, be proclaimed International Literacy Day and be observed world-wide

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the ten year period beginning 1 January 2003 as the Literacy Decade

On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the world about the status of global literacy and adult learning.

Despite many efforts, literacy remains an elusive target. There are almost four billion illiterate people in the world. Approximately 774 million adults lack minimum literacy skills. Around 75 million children are out-of-school and many more attend school irregularly or drop out.

We must all contribute to this cause as much as possible, in order to increase the level of literacy among the people.
